TOKYO: An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale jolted Japan's northeastern Miyago Prefecture and its vicinity on Saturday, said the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The focus of the quake, which happened at 13:34 p.m. local time (0434 GMT), was situated some 125km off the coast of Sendai, Miyagi with a depth of 35.7km under seabed, China's Xinhua news agency quoted the agency and the United States Geological Survey as saying.

There were no instant reports of casualties or damage to properties, and no tsunami warning was issued.
