Mind-blowing
Mr. Popper's Penguins
Rating(out of 5): * * *
(20th Century Fox)

Starring: Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Angela Lansbury
The film is based on a 1938 children’s books – which should roughly tell you what to expect. You know, things like family values, ordinary people triumphing over a giant corporation and a couple of cute animals.
In a digital age and a 3D world like now, films like this should not even exist. After all, the entire film feels like something out of Disney’s vault. However, surprisingly, the film starring Jim Carrey is quite watchable, especially for children.
There are a couple of problems with it – the most obvious are the underdeveloped supporting cast and the rather thin plot.
It revolves around Mr Popper who practically grew up without a father because the latter is too busy going around the world, exploring it. Years later, Popper is a weekend dad with work fulfilling every aspect of his life. Well, that is until he receives six penguins that change the course of his life.
One pretty much knows where the film is heading, but thanks to Carrey’s performance as Popper and his interaction with the adorable penguins – one is okay to suspend disbelief.
While the actor holds back a lot of his comedic routines seen in his earlier films – except for maybe twice – he has outlined Popper as a guy we are familiar with. There’s a hint of Ace Ventura, the lawyer in Liar Liar and even Truman of The Truman Show.
Besides Carrey, the cute penguins do have a winning way about them and Popper’s secretary named Pippi (equally cute Ophelia Lovibond) who uses all the words that start with the letter “P” to construct her sentences. If you give your cynical self a break, you might just enjoy this uncomplicated film.
