KABUL — Afghan President Hamid Karzai has vowed his government will assume responsibility for the country's security as planned despite an assault on a Kabul hotel that left 19 people dead, including eight attackers.
The strike against the Inter-Continental hotel is one of the biggest and most complex to have occurred within Kabul and appears designed to show that insurgents are able to strike even in the centre of power.
It comes about a week after President Barack Obama announced the beginning of an American withdrawal and the transfer of security responsibility in several areas.
Karzai says in Wednesday's statement that the insurgents are “enjoying the killing of innocent people” and “such incidents will not stop us from transitioning security of our country.”
Meanwhile, Afghan police sifted through one of Kabul’s landmark hotels room by room on Wednesday for any more casualties, securing the building after an overnight assault by Taliban suicide bombers killed Afghan civilians and police and a foreigner.
The nine attackers, armed with rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons, stormed the heavily guarded Intercontinental hotel, frequented by Westerners and VIPs, before a NATO helicopter killed the remaining insurgents in a final rooftop battle that ended a raid lasting more than five hours.
The foreign victim was a Spanish civil aviation pilot, according to Spain’s foreign ministry.
The raid needed a NATO helicopter to finally finish off the attackers, and NATO trainers helped oversee the Afghan police response to the raid.
After several explosions, attackers entered the hotel late on Tuesday and made their way to the ballroom, a hotel receptionist said.
Some carried tape recorders playing Taliban war songs and shot at anyone they saw. Guests jumped from second and third floors to escape, the receptionist told Reuters, asking not to be identified.
“The police are still searching room by room to see if there are any casualties or any threats,” Kabul police chief Ayoub Salangi told reporters.
Eight people were wounded in the attack, according to the Interior Ministry.
There have been insurgent attacks at a hotel, guest house and a supermarket in Kabul over the past year, although the capital has been relatively quiet compared with the rest of the country.
The timing of the attack, suggested similarities with other raids meant to show the Taliban retain the ability to strike at will despite gains made by NATO-led troops over the past 18 months.
Some guests included provincial governors attending a conference due to begin on Wednesday over the transition of civil and military responsibility from foreign forces to Afghans, two Afghan officials said.
Last week, Obama announced plans for an initial withdrawal of 10,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of this year, with another 23,000 to leave by the end of 2012, sparking concern the Afghan security forces were not ready to take over.
But President Hamid Karzai said the plan stood.
“This insurgent attack cannot stop our security transition process,” Karzai said in a statement.
LATE-NIGHT ATTACK
Hours after the attack began, some foreign hotel guests were driven away in diplomatic vehicles while others waited on a street outside the hotel as the sun rose over Kabul.
Reuters witnesses heard at least seven blasts over the course of more than five hours, with bursts of gunfire heard.
Three insurgents were shot dead while six blew themselves up.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said several fighters from the Islamist group had attacked the hotel.
Mujtahid, who spoke to Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location, said heavy casualties had been inflicted.
The Taliban often exaggerate the number of casualties in attacks against Western and Afghan government targets.
One blast was heard at the start of the attack and then three more about an hour later, one of the Reuters witnesses said. Bursts of gunfire were heard over the same period and flares lit up the sky.
Reuters television footage showed police firing tracer rounds into the air as other officers moved through the hotel.
Power was cut in the hotel and in surrounding areas after the attack.
The hotel, built on a hill in western Kabul with fortifications around it, was for years the city’s main hotel and is often used for conferences and by Westerners.
Violence has flared across Afghanistan since the Taliban announced the start of a spring offensive at the beginning of May.
The last big attack on a major Kabul hotel used by foreigners was in January 2008, when several Taliban gunmen killed six people in a commando-style raid on the city-centre Serena hotel.
The increase in violence comes as NATO-led forces prepare to hand security responsibility to Afghans in seven areas from next month at the start of the gradual transition that will end with all combat foreign troops leaving by the end of 2014.
The two-day conference to discuss the transition was due to begin in a government building in the centre of the city on Wednesday. Officials said the conference would go on despite the attack.

PETALING JAYA: She is barely a teenager but has run away from home more than 10 times in less than a year.

After the latest episode on May 10, the parents of primary school pupil Yap Wei Mon believe that her latest disappearance may be related to her adult boyfriend.

Her father Yap Thau Hing, 52, said Wei Mon had befriended the man on Facebook.

"She began to frequent Internal cafes around the end of last year after she got hooked to playing computer games and chatting with strangers online."

"She went out a lot on her own, and did not return home on several occasions, but it was usually for not more than a couple of days before we found her, " said the mosaic craftsman from Ampang.

The family suspects that the girl took along her Sony Ericsson handphone, her MyKad and RM150 when she left home last month.

Yap lodged a missing persons report with the Ampang Jaya district police station on the day Wei Mon was last seen.

Malaysia Airlines will ban babies from traveling first class on its Airbus A380 super jumbo jet, according to online reports.

The decision comes after the airline banned babies from the first class section of its fleet of Boeing 747-400 jets.

The baby ban will be extended to its Airbus A380 jets, Malaysia Airlines CEO Tengku Azmil told Australia Business Traveller on Sunday through Twitter. Requests from CNNGo to comment went unanswered at time of writing.

The airline ordered 6 A380s and the first is expected to be delivered in June 2012. "We are planning to stick to out policy for now," Azmil told Australia Business Traveller through Twitter when asked whether the first class section of its A380 planes will have bassinets.

Some Twitter users questioned why the airline doesn't try other nursing techniques, such as employing sky nannies and distributing baby blankets.

Defending his policy, Azmil said that while it was "a tough call," it addresses complaints from first class passengers that they spend a lot of money on first class travel but are often unable to sleep because of wailing infants.

Instead babies and their parents will now need to fly in the airline's business and economy classes.

NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA.—Injured Tiger Woods said Tuesday his best golfing years are ahead of him and he has plenty of time to attain his goal of surpassing the record 18 major titles won by Jack Nicklaus.
While Woods, who has struggled on and off the course for the last 19 months, missed this year’s U.S. Open with injuries and is unsure whether he will play in July’s British Open, the 35-year-old American does not feel like the majors record is moving beyond his grasp.
“Absolutely not. He won when he was 46, right?” Woods said about the Golden Bear, who won his final major at that age in 1986. “I’ve still got some time.
“And on top of that, we’re about the same pace, I believe, years on tour and majors won. So I feel pretty confident of what my future holds and very excited about it.”
Nicklaus won 14 majors through his 35th birthday, the same number that Woods has.
Woods, who aggravated a ligament injury in his left knee and Achilles tendon he suffered at the Masters by trying to compete in the Players Championship in May, said he learned a lesson and would not return until he was 100 per cent fit.
“I’m excited about coming out here and being ready to go instead of trying to kind of patch it, which I’ve been for a while,” Woods told a news conference at the AT&T National PGA event he is hosting this week.
Woods, who has since fallen to world No. 17, noted that Tom Watson showed how long a great player could compete in the majors with his runner-up finish at age 59 in the 2009 British Open at Turnberry, which he lost in a playoff to Stewart Cink.
“I’m 35. I’m not 65,” said Woods. “I’ve still got some years ahead of me. Golf is unlike any other sport. I mean, Watson was, what, 59 years old when he almost won? We can play for a very long time. And given that we have the health to do it, guys have succeeded for a very long time.
“That’s what I would like to do, play this game for as long as I want to. I feel like my best years are still ahead of me.” -The Star

KUALA LUMPUR: Prolonged hours in front of television and computer screens have led to more youths in the country becoming obese, says a Health Ministry official.

Public health department nutrition division director Rokiah Don said Tuesday that youths were spending most of their time in front of a screen, either to watch television, play video games or use the computer, causing them to lead an unhealthy lifestyle.

"It is as though we are in the age of screens. People are spending more time in front of a screen."

"This contributes to obesity among youths because the output of energy does not balance out with their energy input, or food they eat, " she told reporters.

Rokiah said this after launching the Malaysian Association for the study of Obesity (Maso) 2011 Conference at a hotel here on Tuesday.

Pakistan denies firing rockets into Afghanistan
ISLAMABAD (AP): Pakistan on Monday denied accusations by Afghanistan that it fired hundreds of rockets into two eastern Afghan provinces over the past three weeks, killing 36 people, including 12 children.
Pakistani army spokesman Maj. Athar Abbas said no rounds have been intentionally fired into Afghanistan. He said it is possible that a few rounds may have accidentally fallen into Afghanistan when security forces targeted militants carrying out cross-border attacks into Pakistan.
The back-and-forth accusations have further strained the troubled relationship between the two countries. The Afghan government has repeatedly criticized its neighbor for not targeting Afghan Taliban militants who use its territory to launch cross-border attacks - an accusation echoed by the US and other NATO countries.
Pakistan has recently reversed this criticism, saying Afghan and NATO forces have not done enough to target Pakistani Taliban militants who have established sanctuaries in eastern Afghanistan and are using them to attack Pakistan.
The Afghan and Pakistani Taliban have close links but different goals. The Afghan Taliban is focused on fighting NATO and Afghan troops in Afghanistan. The Pakistani Taliban's main goal is toppling the U.S.-allied Pakistani government.
Abbas, the army spokesman, claimed there have been five cross-border attacks in the last month against Pakistani border posts that have killed 55 paramilitary soldiers and tribal policemen and injured 80 others. The attacks took place in the tribal areas of Bajur and Mohmand and in the settled area of Dir, he said.
"The fleeing militants were engaged by the security forces, and a few accidental rounds going across (into Afghanistan) cannot be ruled out," Abbas said.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday accused Pakistan of firing 470 rockets into the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar and said "they should be stopped immediately."
And "if they are not being carried out by Pakistan, Pakistan should make it clear who is behind the attacks," he said in a statement issued by the presidential palace.
The Pakistani army has said the recent cross-border attacks came from Kunar, an area where NATO has recently withdrawn many of its combat troops.
Karzai said he discussed the rocket barrage with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zadari during an anti-terrorism conference in Tehran on Saturday, the same day the Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman spoke of the attacks and warned that Afghanistan would defend itself.
"The government of Pakistan should understand that there will be a reaction for killing Afghan citizens," said spokesman Mohammad Zahir Azimi.
Saying it was in response to Pakistani fire, Afghan security forces in the eastern provinces of Khost and Paktika launched artillery across the border at least twice on Friday, Azimi said. Afghan security officials said NATO also fired into Pakistan on June 17. NATO and Pakistani military officials earlier denied any knowledge of such border fire from the Afghan side.
The Afghan president said he also discussed the border attack with Afghan NATO commander Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry during his regular national security council meeting on Sunday.
Afghan border police spokesman Edris Mohmand, who reported 36 Afghans killed by the rockets, including 12 children, said 2,000 families have fled the Asmar and Nangalam districts of Kunar province and the Goshta district in Nangarhar.
"All these attacks have been from Pakistan's side and for sure they are Pakistani weapons being used against innocent Afghans," Mohmand said. "The border police in the eastern region have been equipped with heavy artillery but we are waiting for orders from the interior minister."

PARALYZED cat Mog is learning to walk again - with SWIMMING lessons

The tabby was feared to be crippled for life after losing the use of his front legs in a road accident.

But a local vert suggested hydrotherapy treatment - despite felines famously hating water.

And Mog is lapping up his 15 minutes sessions at the 13ft long pool, which is normally used by injured dogs.

One year old Mog could move only by agonizingly pushing himself along with his back legs.

But after ten weeks he has made a vast improvement and owner Veronica Ashworth expects him to take his

Delighted Veronica, 62, of Lostwithiel, Cornwall, said, "Most cats do anything to avoid water, but he seems to really like swimming.

"The therapy is working and there's definitely improvement."

"He does a sort of funny doggy paddle. I think he realizes it is doing him good."

Mog has his £30 a time treatment at the Hawksland centre in St Issey with pet physio Ros Boisseau.

She said, "The first time I out him in he looked at me in horror, but he's regaining strength. I've never treated a cat with hydrotherapy before."

could this be another case of good girl gone bad?
We adore Jennifer Aniston for all her Good Girl niceness (trust us, Rachel Greene and her so-trendy tresses will always have a special place in our hearts), but it seems like Jen's flirting with the dark side these days—and we think it's delish!
We gotta wonder tho if Jen's newest dude, Justin Theroux, is behind this nice-to-naughty transformation. Could his bad boy charm be rubbing off on our fave babe?
Cause Jenny seems to be extra spicy these days—and we're not the only ones who think so!
"She's naughtier now that she's been in years!" A source close to J.A. spills. "She is noticeably more fun and open and sassier than the Jen everyone is used to."
The uber-tight twosome have been stuck at each other's hip lately and Jen even had her latest BF in tow for a recent appearance of Inside the Actor's Studio.
While it wasn't J.T. that Jen listed as her biggest "turn on" when chatting with host James Lipton—it was shoes, FYI—things seem to be getting more and more serious with her motocycle ridin', leather boots wearing costar turned BF.
First it was H'wood parties with her gal pals and now she's showing him off on the tele…
Guess we'll have to start thinking of a celeb couple nickname, huh? Any suggestions?
Jen even fessed to E! very own Cat Sadley that she's been spending more time in New York (which is Justin's regular stomping grounds, for those not in the know) and now considers herself "bi-coastal."
But back to the bad girl biz:
Case in point: when asked by Lipton what she things God would stay when she eventually ends up at the pearly gates of Heaven, Jen joked, "Never thought I'd see you here!"
Please! Like He would ever refuse America's Sweetheart.
Of course, J will be getting completely devilish in her new flick Horrible Bosses where she plays a way horny and completely inappropriate dentist, and Jennifer was more than psyched to ditch her rom com cutesiness.
"I never get to play that girl!" She spills to the Actor's Studio of the tres untradish role.
She continued gushing about how much she loved the role to E!, telling us all the naughty deets about how her boobs are hanging out (sans a lab coat, of course) and how liberating and fun it was to be dirty and bush the boundaries—the exact opposite of what people expect form her.
Heck, she even made a couple penis jokes and dropped an F-bomb.
And if that weren't enough to initiate her into the bad girls club, Jen has made a permanent change: some fresh ink. Jen's reps confirmed to Life & Style that the babe got tatted for the first time recently—and we're sure Justin and his handful of tattoos has something to do with it.
A new bad boy BF, an uber-naughty role, and some permanent ink to boot—it's a whole new Jen.
Get on with your bad self, girl!

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese history teacher beat an 11-year-old pupil senseless and threw her body from a fourth-floor classroom window, killing her in a so-far unexplained frenzy, a local newspaper said on Monday.

Li Hengyi, 28, attacked Zhang Yaoyi during class on Wednesday at a middle school in Yongzhou city in the central province of Hunan, the Beijing News said.

"He knocked her head against the desks back and forth and stomped on her after she fell," the newspaper said. "He then produced a steel bar to beat her."

Li later picked up the motionless Zhang, said he was going to take her to the school clinic, but opened the window and threw her out instead, the newspaper added, quoting an unnamed witness.

Li, whose motive was unknown, had been detained, the newspaper said.

There have been a series of attacks on schools and schoolchildren around China in recent years, some by people who have lost their jobs or felt left out of the country's economic boom.

In May, a man set fire to a kindergarten classroom, killing three children and injuring 14 people.

From writer's point of view,
Teacher should be teaching instead of killing! This kind of behavior and people should have punishment!!! May God bless the soul of the young girl rest in peace!!

OTTAWA — A float plane, a frigate, a BBQ, a game of street hockey, a dragon boat race and likely a taste of Anne of Green Gables. William and Kate’s upcoming Canadian visit is shaping up as a tour with some distinctly Canadian twists.
And the newlywed couple will be getting some private time too, taking a helicopter out of Calgary to an undisclosed getaway where they’ll “catch their breath” for more than a day.
Heritage Minister James Moore said the royal tour by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will showcase the “best of what Canada has to offer.”
And he was ready with the superlatives Tuesday, saying this is shaping up to be the “highest profile, most televised, most watched, most written about royal visit that Canada has perhaps ever had.”
Among the highlights of the detailed itinerary released Tuesday:
OTTAWA: Visit kicks off on June 30 at Rideau Hall. “All are invited on the grounds,” Governor General David Johnston said as he encouraged Canadians to take part. That night, they’ll join accomplished young Canadians at a BBQ.
July 1 starts at a citizenship ceremony at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, then travel to Parliament Hill for Canada Day celebrations.
On July 2, they’ll plant a tree — a Canadian hemlock — at Rideau Hall and then join a reception at the Canadian War Museum for veterans, war brides and families.
MONTREAL, July 2: Visit a children’s hospital and a hospitality and tourism school before boarding the frigate HMCS Montreal for an overnight sail to Quebec City.
QUEBEC CITY, July 3: A Sunday morning prayer service on the frigate, a youth discussion at a home for troubled youth and a ceremony with Royal 22e Regiment, the famous Van Doos.
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, July 4: Arrive at Province House in Charlottetown, travel to Dalvay-by-the-Sea for a Sea King helicopter demonstration. William, who serves as a day job as a Royal Air Force pilot flying search-and-rescue missions, may even take the controls of the Sea King himself. The couple will watch a dragon boat race and later see Canadian Forces personnel demonstrate their rescue abilities.
YELLOWKNIFE, N.W.T., July 5: A demonstration of Dene games and Arctic sports and even a game of street hockey. Take a float plane to Blatchford Lake east of Yellowknife for a visit with Canadian Rangers and aboriginal youth.
CALGARY, July 7: After taking a day off, the couple will visit a research and innovation centre and then attend evening reception hosted by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to take in Calgary Stampede activities. The next day, they’ll kick off the Calgary Stampede parade and visit the Calgary zoo before flying to Los Angeles.
The stats: Nine days, seven cities, three speeches by Prince William. Some 1,300 journalists are registered to cover the tour, including 241 from outside Canada. -The Star

A grandmother who stopped breathing for more than half an hour after suffering a heart attack awoke to find relatives had already cut off locks of her hair, in a case that has left the medical profession astounded.

Doctors originally believed that Jean McDonald was clinically dead after she suffered a large cardiac arrest in May.
Hospital staff even warned the 64 year-old’s family to say their last goodbyes after she was given almost zero chance of surviving after doctors had given up hope.
Doctors had warned the family that she was “profoundly sick” and had a “very poor prognosis” with less than one per cent change of survival.
On Wednesday night medical experts described her case as astounding and said that anyone else who suffered such “degree of physical damage would be dead”.
But after more than 25 minutes of not breathing, Mrs McDonald then amazed her family and officials by coming out of her induced coma and came “back to life”.
Such was the scale of her attack, doctors expected her to die within 15 minutes.
She was equally amazed to find that her family had cut off locks of her hair as mementoes after having said emotional last goodbyes.
On Wednesday, it emerged that Mrs McDonald, of Chapel Hill, Braintree, Essex, had made, what can only be described, as a miraculous recovery.
She is now able to talk, eat, walk and shower and her family hopes she will be able to return home next weekend.
Doctors at the local hospital have been left so amazed by her case that they want to report it to a prestigious medical journal as she continues to defy the odds.
Prayers have been said by relatives all over the world, including in America and Korea, in the hope it will help her recovery.
Mrs McDonald, who has 16 grandchildren, was rushed to Broomfield Hospital on May 15 following a series of fits, which lead to a large cardiac arrest.
The previous day she had been shopping for an outfit for her nephew's forthcoming wedding but went to bed that night feeling unwell.
The next morning the retired shop assistant suffered a series of fits before calling for an ambulance at 8.04am.
As they rushed her to hospital, paramedics were forced to pull over as her heart stopped beating and then desperately attempted to resuscitate her for the remaining four miles.
After arriving at Broomfield Hospital, in Chelmsford, Essex, at 8.58 am doctors then fought a race-against-time battle to save her over the next two hours as they tried to keep her alive.
When she arrived in hospital, medics pumped her full of blood thinning medicines. She was then moved to intensive care and put on a life support machine before and into an induced coma.
After stopping breathing for more than 25 minutes, doctors marked he 4.5 out of 5 on the brain damage scale.
With little hope for survival they told family members to say their goodbyes and allowed them also to cut off her hair.
A week before the incident had been visiting her sister in the US. Doctors are working to establish whether it was linked to Deep vein thrombosis, which is a form of blood clotting, normally associated with long distance flying.
On Wednesday, Dave McDonald, her husband, described how he was faced with a “helpless” situation.
“I watched her flatline on the screen and I was thinking she is dying in front of me,” he said.
“I was completely helpless I could see my wife dying and I couldn’t do anything about it.
“It is incredible. But it’s scary as well because she is making so much progress so quickly that I worry what a bad day may do.”
He added: “I am not a religious person but it is some sort of divine intervention.
"They did say she probably wouldn’t survive as she had suffered such a long time without oxygen.
“It is a miracle - even some of the doctors said that. Everyone all the way through her treatment... saved her life.”
On the third day after the cardiac arrest he saidv she was partially breathing for herself and the doctors decided they would remove the breathing tube. A few days later he said she moved after she leant over and kissed her.
“I did it again and she did it again. It was quite frightening," he added
She has since "progressed to the point of speaking pretty well".
“She’s not 100 per cent recovered yet but when she comes home she is going to be in a different environment.”
Mrs McDonald has told her family that she plans to go to start going to church once she is released from hospital.
Doctors now say her only remaining injuries are to her brain although there are fears she could remain in vegetative state.
The part of her brain controlling arms and legs remains severely damaged but she has been able to move some of her body.
Mr McDonald said she has no recollection of the week before the cardiac arrest but the rest of memory is intact.
On Wednesday night, Dr Kevin Kiff, director of the hospital's Intensive Care Unit, told The Daily Telegraph, that his patient’s recovery had left doctors astounded.
He said she had a less than one per cent chance of recovery but had done “amazingly well”.
“She has gone way above and beyond the expected improvement for someone suffering an out of hospital cardiac arrest,” he said.
“Anyone who is aged over 60, with that degree of physical damage, would normally be dead.
“We are delighted that we have achieved that level of improvement and that she proved us wrong, because every step of the way we were very objective with the family.”
Doctors now hope to write about the case for The Lancet.
Gary Sanderson, a spokesman for East of England Ambulance Service, said: "I'ts amazing that the patient has survived all odds and is now on the road to recovery.
"It proves that rapid interventions by ambulance staff in pre hospital situations such as this one saves lives.”
A hairdresser has also been called in to clean up her hair after they family cut it off.
Mr McDonald also paid tribute to the hospital staff whom cared for his wife, saying they were “absolutely brilliant”.

Your intuition and artistic abilities should blossom like wildflowers in spring. It's important that you keep a written record of you're your insights and inspirations. You may eventually want to put them into an actionable form.

As long as you use your talents and continue to enrich your spiritual life, you should be content throughout 2011. You'll enjoy robust health. You view the world in a unique way, and you thrive on learning. Your everyday life should be a stimulating one. 2011 could be one of your happiest years - though the world situation could sadden you.

Are most of your friends visionaries? Some family members and/or colleagues may not understand you - or your friends. Yet they probably think you border on sainthood. Confusing? You're a force to be reckoned with - if only others knew how.

Your kindness is special and apparent, so some can overlook your ideas. January and March should be your best months - though there won't be any real bad ones. You're always the one who's glad to help, so let others help you, too.

You've made elaborate plans for 2011, and are determined to complete them all. There could, however, be last-minute changes that need to be made. Don't be too inflexible. Go with the flow.

You're an upbeat person, and no matter what happens, you do your best to make the most of it - especially when it comes to acquiring knowledge. You'll learn more in the first few months than you did in all of 2010. Don't push yourself too hard, however. There's no hurry. Don't forget to take time out to relax and enjoy life.

You enjoy getting out and meeting new people, and there are very few whom you consider your soul mates. It's easier for you to make casual friends, and you are kind to even your difficult relatives.

This year, you just might find more close companions than you ever did before. Learn from them. Get to know them well. Enjoy!

You may start 2011 feeling tired and discouraged, but your mood will pick up very quickly. Keep yourself busy doing what you love. It'll lift your spirits and stimulate your creativity.

You have a strong constitution, and you rarely get sick. However, you do work hard and end too many of your days going home exhausted. Besides the obvious - eating right and getting sufficient exercise - you need to pace yourself when you're busy. The world won't end if a task takes a little longer to finish. Take care of yourself.

Family is important to you, but you tend to spend more time with co-workers than you do with your loved ones. Find more efficient ways to get work done, and don't take up the slack with more work.

Jobs come and jobs go, but family and friends are forever. Make a resolution to spend more time with these very special people in 2011.

LOS ANGELES: Blame the potato chip. It's the biggest demon behind that pound-a-year weight creep that plagues many of us, a major diet study found. Bigger than soda, candy and ice-cream.

And the reason is partly due to the old advertising cliche: You can't eat just one.

Obesity expert Dr. F. Xavier Pi-Sunyer of the St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York said, "They're very tasty and they have a very good texture. People generally don't take one or two chips. They have a whole bag."

What we eat and how much of it we consume has far more impact than exercise and most other habits do on long-term weight gain, according to the study by Harvard University scientists. It's the most comprehensive look yet at the effect of individual foods and lifestyle choices like sleep time and quitting smoking.

The results are in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

Weight problems are epidemic. Two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese. Childhood obesity has tripled in the past three decades. Pounds often are packed on gradually over decades, and many people struggle to limit weight gain without realizing what's causing it.

WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND—A young Emperor penguin took a rare wrong turn from the Antarctic and ended up stranded on a New Zealand beach — the first time in 44 years the aquatic bird has been sighted in the wild in the South Pacific country.
Local resident Christine Wilton was taking her miniature Schnauzer dog Millie for a walk on Peka Peka Beach on the North Island’s western coast when she discovered the bird Monday evening.
“It was out-of-this-world to see it ... like someone just dropped it from the sky,” Wilton said.
“It looked like ‘Happy Feet’ — it was totally in the wrong place,” she said, referring to the 2006 animated musical featuring a young penguin who finds himself far from home.
Conservation experts say the penguin is about 10 months old and stands about 32 inches (80 centimetres) high. Colin Miskelly, a curator at Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand, said the bird was likely born during the last Antarctic winter. It may have been searching for squid and krill when it took a wrong turn and landed about 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometres) from the Antarctic coast.
Emperor penguins are the tallest and largest species of penguin and can grow up to 4 feet (122 centimetres) high and weigh more than 75 pounds (34 kilograms).
Their amazing journey to breeding grounds deep in the Antarctic was chronicled in the 2005 documentary “March of the Penguins,” which highlighted their ability to survive the brutal winter.
Miskelly said Emperor penguins can spend months at a time in the ocean, coming ashore only to moult or rest. He doesn’t know what might have caused this particular one to become disoriented. Miskelly said the penguin appeared healthy and well-fed, with plenty of body fat, and probably came ashore for a rest.
However, Miskelly said the penguin would need to find its way back south soon if it were to survive. Despite the onset of the New Zealand winter, the bird was probably hot and thirsty, he said, and it had been eating wet sand.
“It doesn’t realize that the sand isn’t going to melt inside it,” Miskelly said. “They typically eat snow, because it’s their only liquid.”
However, he said the bird was in no immediate danger from dehydration because Emperor penguins can also drink salt water in the summer.
Peter Simpson, a program manager for New Zealand’s Department of Conservation, said officials are asking people to stand back about 30 feet (10 metres) from the creature and to avoid letting dogs near it.
Other than that, he said, officials plan to let nature take its course. Simpson said the bird could live several weeks before needing another meal.
The last confirmed sighting of a wild Emperor in New Zealand was in 1967 at the southern Oreti Beach, Simpson said.
Miskelly, the curator, said the bird appears to weigh about 22 pounds (10 kilograms) — healthy for its age, but only about one-third of the weight the penguin would need to reach before it could survive a breeding cycle on the Antarctic ice. -The Star

(CNN) - Police in Indiana say they arrested an Amish man who arrived in a horse-drawn buggy for a presumed rendezvous with a 12 year old girl to whom he had sent sexually explicit cell phone messages.

Officers arrested 21 year old William R. Yoder on Wednesday after he rode up to the Takathemoke Restaurant in Milroy, Indiana, and approached an undercover agent.

Connersville, Indiana, police Detective Craig Pennington said, "The suspect arrived, in a one-horse carriage as he said he would, was identified by the undercover officer confirming his identity and was taken into custody without incident."

Yoder was taken to Fayette County Jail, about 60 miles east of Indianapolis, where in a videotaped statement he confessed that he sent video messages, naked pictures of himself and lewd text messages.

According to Pennington, Yoder said he believed he was going to have sex with the girl, that he realized it was a bad decision and that he had never done anything like it before. -CNN

The talk around town here these days isn't so much about bushels of corn per acre. It's about cubic feet of water.
After weeks of worrying about the rising Missouri River, people are fluent in the language of flood and names like Oahe, Fort Randall and Gavins Point.
Those are the dams that control what happens here and downstream along the swollen river, which has flooded areas from Montana through Missouri, forcing residents to shore up protections, raise temporary levees and evacuate their homes.
"There was some talk this morning about more than 150,000 cubic feet per second coming out of Oahe," said Jerry Compton, working on Sunday at a convenience store in Missouri Valley.
If the release from the Oahe Dam is increased further, she said: "We will eventually get water."
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers increased water releases on Saturday from two dams — Oahe above Pierre, South Dakota's capital, and Big Bend Dam just downstream — to make room for expected potentially heavy rains through early next week.
Downstream in northwest Missouri on Sunday, water began flowing over levees in Holt and Atchison counties, officials said.

In Holt County, a levee was breached late Saturday in several places, including a 100-foot stretch near Big Lake, said Aaron Abbott, a deputy sheriff and dispatcher.
'Going to get worse' Water flooded two highways, several homes were under as much as five feet of water and there was extensive farmland flooding, said Diana Phillips, clerk and flood plain manager for the village of Big Lake.
"It's only going to get worse because there is lots of water coming in," Phillips said.
In Atchison County, where farmland was flooding, people have been evacuating for days, said Julie Fischer, a dispatcher for emergency services.
"Everybody is pretty much gone," Fischer said. "The roads are closing, there is no way in or out."
The Corps has been increasing water releases from five dams in North Dakota and South Dakota to roughly double prior records to relieve reservoirs swollen by heavy winter snows and spring rainfall at the river's Montana headwaters.
For large cities such as Omaha and Council Bluffs, the amount of water from the releases can be handled. But for smaller towns north and south of Omaha's metropolitan area, residents fret that the water could be a problem.
The threat of flooding is stressful, said Compton, who knows her customers by name and even knows what brand of cigarettes they buy.
"People either moved out of their homes to another house, or they're trying to live in a camper. Some people have had their utilities cut off," she said. "We just sit here and wait."
Peak releases are planned until at least mid-August and high flows are expected until December. -msn.com

The hit-and-run driver who killed 6 year old Owen Wightman was caught on CCTV.

His car was filmed by a camera on a passing bus in Wakefield, West Yorks.

The Sun today proposes a £10,000 reward in the hunt for the driver.

Owen's brother was heartbroken and sobbed yesterday after leaving a touching tribute at the spot where he was killed.

Jack, 12, and other family members had made the sombre pilgrimage to lay flowers and a cuddly monkey.

The heartbroken Jack attached a note that read: "Dear Owen, you was the best bro ever. Even when we used to fight and argue I still love you anyway."

As Jack sat staring at the tributes he burst into tears and had to be comforted by another family member.
Dad Neil and mum Joanne yesterday pleaded for the fugitive driver who sped off after hitting Owen to give himself up. "We have lost our baby and ask for someone to please come forward so we can lay him to rest," said Joanne.

Police wish to trace the driver's car, said to be a light hatchback, using CCTV footage captured by a passing bus. They also have sections of the vehicle which broke off when Owen was hit on Saturday as he crossed a road with pal Mason Boardman in Wakefield.

"They are with the forensic service and I am very hopeful the scientists will be able to identify exactly the make and model," said Detective Superintendent Paul Taylor.

"I am also hoping with CCTV enhancement we may get a registration number. That being the case, I would appeal for the driver to come forward and give their version of events prior to us knocking on their door."
Det Supt Taylor said Joanne, 31, and Neil, 33, were "ravaged" and Mason, 7, was still in shock. Mason's dad Lee said: "He hasn't wanted to go to school today."

You're an optimistic soul, Sag, and this should be a great year for you. Your intuition is very active, so "it" just might happen. Just be sure to look before you leap.

Most of the time, you're pretty healthy. You exercise, take vitamins, and spend lots of time in the Sun. However, there are times when you push yourself too hard, and end up collapsed and exhausted. Try to pace yourself. Good health is important, but you should balance it with friendship, contemplation, and acquiring knowledge. There's more to life than breaking records.

You have many friends and beloved relatives, and it's difficult for you to give equal time to everyone. Sometimes you neglect one or two people - and they could be offended. It's hard to remember everyone, but if you can't see someone, try to at least give him or her a phone call. It's better than nothing, and this person will be be glad to hear from you.

Your health, social life, and career should all blossom in 2011, Scorpio. Opportunities will come, and you'll jump on them. Make sure, however, that this is what you truly want.

You're going to feel stronger and more confident, and this will spill over into other departments of life. Your optimism and self-assuredness should spill over into your relationships with others, too.

Your health will thrive if you tend to it. The only problem you might face is insomnia. Try to relax fully before you go to sleep. If your mind keeps buzzing, so will you.

You enjoy your own company, but this year you just might turn into a social butterfly. Friends and family members will want to make use of your money sense and keen insights in to benefit their lives. You'll act like a party animal, and therefore new acquaintances will want to see you again. Watch the overindulging, however. You won't want to gain any weight.

Some perplexing decisions await you - and the more you ponder them, the more confused you'll become. Watch a movie. Sleep on it all. They are too important to act on impulsively or with too much emotion.

Usually, you're pretty healthy, but this year you might feel slower and more listless than usual. No, it's not because you're getting older. Sluggish Saturn is passing through your sign. Counter its effects by exercising, getting out with your friends, and exploring new horizons. Set new goals and explore new interests. You're not the type to give in easily.

You're as congenial as ever, but you may be preoccupied. Whatever is troubling you, don't keep it to yourself. Your family and friends may worry about you needlessly. Whether you're wondering about your job, a relationship, or your finances, share your concerns with someone. It will relieve misgivings, and he or she might actually help find solutions. Hey, it might even be fun!

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tan family of Damansara Utama is proof that the average Malaysian family cares for its domestic maids.

Not only do the Tans treat their maid of seven years, Sarmini Muhyadi, 28, as a member of the family, they also helped her get a diploma at a local university.

Sarmini studied part-time and completed a diploma in management course at the Open University of Malaysia (OUM) with an admirable cumulative grade point average of 3.39 at the end of last year.

She will graduate today.

Industrial design lecturer Tan Choo Tang, 56, and his wife, Wee Phooi Khuan, 47, are so used to Sarmini taking care of the house and their four children that they would find it difficult to replace her when she returns home to Kampung Banyumas in Jawa Tengah, Indonesia, to work as a teacher.

Diplomats have already said there have been months of preliminary talks between the two sides. Photograph: Reza Shirmohammadi/AP
The US and other foreign powers are engaged in preliminary talks with the Taliban about a possible settlement to the war in Afghanistan, the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, has said. It is the first official confirmation of US involvement in such negotiations.
Diplomats have already said there have been months of preliminary talks between the two sides, and Karzai, who is a strong advocate of peace talks, has long said that Afghans are in contact with insurgent groups.
"Peace talks are going on with the Taliban. The foreign military and especially the United States itself is going ahead with these negotiations," Karzai told a news conference in the Afghan capital. The US embassy in Kabul declined to comment on Karzai's statement.
Karzai was speaking the day after the UN security council split the UN sanctions list for Taliban and al-Qaida figures into two, which envoys said could help induce the Taliban into talks on a peace deal in Afghanistan.
Despite hopes that talks with the Taliban could provide the political underpinning for the US staged withdrawal from Afghanistan, the discussions are still not at the stage where they can be a deciding factor.
So little is known about the exchanges that they have been open to widely different interpretations.
There are also many Afghans, among them women's and civil society activists, who fear talks with insurgents could undo much of the progress they have made since the Taliban government was ousted in 2001.
The closest anyone in the US establishment has come to publicly acknowledging efforts to kick-start talks was when defense secretary Robert Gates said this month there could be political talks with the Taliban by the end of this year, if Nato's military advances on the ground were sustained.
Afghanistan's neighbours are nervous about plans for a strategic partnership with the US, which may include long-term bases on Afghan soil, Karzai also warned.
"The issue of strategic partnership deal has caused tensions with our neighbours," Karzai said. "When we sign this strategic partnership, at the same time we must have peace in Afghanistan."
That is unlikely however, as the deal is expected to be concluded in months, and even the most optimistic supporters of talks expect the process to take years. If successful, the deal might ease worries among those Afghans who fear the US will pull out too quickly, leaving a weak, impoverished government to fend off militants, and those who worry the foreign forces they see as occupiers will never leave.
President Barack Obama is expected to announce next month how many troops he plans to withdraw from Afghanistan as part of a commitment to begin reducing the US military presence from July and hand over to Afghan security forces by 2014.
The Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, told PBS Newshour on Friday he was expecting a "substantial" reduction in troop numbers. "There's going to be a drawdown," he said. "I am confident that it will be one that's substantial. I certainly hope so."
There currently are about 100,000 US troops fighting in Afghanistan, up from about 34,000 when US president Barack Obama took office in 2009. -The Guardian

Numbers for Father's Day
This is a big day for the 66.3 million fathers in America.
Nearly 95 million Father’s Day cards were given last year in the United States, making Father’s Day the fourth-largest card-sending occasion.

Sons and daughters send 50 percent of the Father's Day card to their dads. Nearly 20 percent of Father’s Day cards are purchased by wives for their husbands. That leaves 30 percent of the cards which go to grandfathers, sons, brothers, uncles and “someone special.”

While not everyone in America is a fan of Father's Day, 72 percent of Americans plan to celebrate or acknowledge Father’s Day.

Gifts for Father's Day
Neckties are an old standby and lead the list of Father’s Day gifts. A good place to buy dad a tie or a  shirt might be one of 9,189 men’s clothing stores around the country.

Other items high on the list of Father’s Day gifts include those items you may find in dad’s toolbox such as hammers, wrenches and screwdrivers. You could buy some of these items for dad at one of the nation’s 14,864  hardware stores or 5,795 home centers.

Other traditional gifts for dad such as fishing rods and golf clubs make for a happy Father's Day for the 22,410 sporting goods stores in America.

More than 68 million Americans participated at a barbecue in the last year — it’s probably safe to assume many of these barbecues took place on Father’s Day.

Mr. Mom
Mr. Mom is becoming a more common sight at parks across America with 147,000 estimated “stay-at-home” dads. These married fathers with children under 15 years old have remained out of the labor force for more than one year primarily so they can care for the family while their wives work outside the home. These fathers cared for 268,000 children under 15.

The dads seem to stay home more with younger children. Preschoolers claim 20 percent of fathers with employed wives who were the primary caregiver for their preschooler. In contrast, only 6 percent of fathers provided the most hours of care for their grade-school-aged child.

Many families split the responsibility of child care. Many Dad's (32%) with full time jobs regularly worked evening or night shifts and were the primary source of care for their preschoolers during their children’s mother’s working hours.- US Census Bureau

Nato has accused Muammar Gaddafi of using mosques and children's parks as shields after the Libyan leader taunted the alliance in an address broadcast to protesters in Tripoli.
In a speech piped through loudspeakers to a few thousand people demonstrating in Green Square, Gaddafi railed against Nato's intensified air strikes in the capital.
"Nato will be defeated," Gaddafi yelled in a hoarse, agitated voice to the crowd. "They will pull out in defeat."
Nato spokeswoman Oana Lungescu dismissed Gaddafi's speech as propaganda, and countered claims from Libya's prime minister on Friday that the alliance was deliberately targeting civilian buildings. "We are saving countless lives every day across the country," she said. "We are conducting operations with utmost care and precision to avoid civilian casualties. Civilian casualties figures mentioned by the Libyan regime are pure propaganda."
She also accused Gaddafi and his regime of "systematically and brutally attacking the Libyan people", saying government forces "have been shelling cities, mining ports and using mosques and children's parks as shields".
Nato has been ramping up the pressure on Gaddafi's entrenched regime. Though most air strikes happen at night, daytime raids have grown more frequent.
Officials on Saturday took journalists to visit a university building that the government claims was hit by a Nato air strike. Students and staff told reporters that an explosion that tore a hole in a three-story building housing classrooms and offices happened sometime on Friday, though accounts differed on the timing. No one was reported injured or killed.
One English-speaking student interviewed by the Associated Press was told what to say in Arabic by a plainclothes government official standing nearby.
The campus sits a few hundred meters from what appears to be a military installation. The building that was damaged was an aging concrete structure next to what students said were new university buildings under construction.
Libya's health ministry released new casualty figures that put the number of civilians killed in Nato air strikes up until 7 June at 856. There was no way to independently verify the figure and previous government-announced tolls from individual strikes have proven to be exaggerated. -The Guardian
